When Disney announced that their next live action adaptation was The Lion King, there was a tad bit of concern amongst fans. After all, the 1994 masterpiece is very near and dear to many of us. How can an adaptation of such a legendary movie match up? Well, consider our fears soothed. Director Jon Favreau recently tweeted that James Earl Jones will return as Mufasa.
Disney fans were stunned to learn that Jones will return to play Mufasa as his first performance was a shining star in an already stellar film. Yet this casting / fan service should come as no surprise. Jon Favreau previously directed the live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. This film was warmly received by fans and critics alike as it paid homage to both the beloved animated film and novel by Rudyard Kipling. The mix of CGI animation, rhythmic storytelling, and a groundbreaking cast sent the 2016 film to the top of the charts. Favreau has proven that he knows how to respect source material while creating something innovative.
Yet James Earl Jones isn’t the only casting news for the upcoming film. Actor, comedian, and rapper Donald Glover has been cast to play Mufasa’s son, Simba. Glover has also been previously casted as a young Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars 2018 Han Solo film, making him the second Star Wars veteran for the new Lion King Film. (For those unaware, James Earl Jones voiced ultimate baddie, Darth Vader)
Glover’s career is beginning to skyrocket as he been previously casted in successful projects such as The Martian and Community. He even has a “secret” role in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, although many fans highly suspect he will play Miles Morales a.k.a Ultimate Spider-Man, as there had been overwhelming demand from his fans that he play that role.
After seeing the success of The Jungle Book and being pretty darn optimistic about Beauty and the Beast, we are eager to see how the our favorite kings of the jungle will appear on the big screen in a fresh light!
So, who else do you want to be casted for The Lion King? We would love to see Jeremy Irons return as the villainous Scar. Who else could sing Be Prepared the same way?
